5 Tips for Choosing the Right Pair of Glasses

Wearing glasses has become quite trendy. Gone are the days of the “nerd” style as more and more people are purchasing glasses merely as a fashion accessory. Even individuals who do not need prescription glasses are investing in stylish frames and clear lenses in order to accessorize. But, with such a huge selection available, how can you make sure that you find the right frame for you? Trying on every frame in the store can be frustrating and time-consuming. Here are five tips to help you find the frame of your dreams!

1. Consider the Shape

The shape of the frame is one of the most important things to consider. If you want to really make sure you are pulling this look off, you must first take a look at the shape of your face. The best way to go about selecting frames for your face is to choose opposite shapes. For example, if you have a round face, rectangular frames will look best while oval ones will bring out a longer, thinner face. On the other hand, people with square-shaped faces will rock the round Harry Potter look!

Oval faces are the easiest shapes to fit for glasses as they can wear nearly any frame that is placed on them. If you have a wide forehead and a narrow chin you may want to pick a frame that will taper out at the bottom, evening out your shape. Also, choose a frame that is roughly around the same size as your face.

If you aren’t sure of your face type and want a fun way to figure it out, pull your hair back away from your face and stand in front of a mirror. Using lipstick or an eyeliner pencil, trace the shape of your face onto the mirror and check out your artwork. Most people can usually tell the shape of their face right away.

2. Select Your Style

History shows us that the size of frames have changed drastically from large styles dwindling down to tiny ones. However, who knows if the trend will reverse itself? Tiny wire rims were once popular, as were oversized, saucer-shaped frames.

Even though you may want to be daring and try to start the new revolution by choosing a frame that is completely out of the ordinary, if you are going for a fashionable look, it is best to stay at least somewhat current. It is also important to consider the image you are trying to project; aviator styles and huge frames do not project a polished image or make you look put-together. Styles change every few years, so be prepared to update your frames accordingly. If you are job-hunting, courting a potential spouse, or giving a big presentation at work, the style of your glasses will add or detract from your overall image. Similarly, ultra-trendy styles tend to become outdated quickly and will need to be replaced. In other words, invest carefully and wisely.

3. Pick Your Material

Frames are made up of a variety of materials including plastics, metals, and some are even rimless. Because metal frames tend to blend into the face, they don’t make as much of a statement as colored plastic frames. By the same token, older women may want to consider plastic frames because the metal styles may emphasize eye creases. Durability is another important concern. Metal tends to bend more than plastic, which may cause the lens to pop out easier.

4. Code Your Color

If you plan on wearing a different pair of glasses every day, by all means invest in some great colors! For the rest of us, however, color is a careful part of choosing your frames. Always stick with neutral colors like black, brown, or clear to avoid clashing with any wildly colorful articles of clothing you may have.

You need to consider your hair color, skin tone, and wardrobe when picking out your glasses. Black frames accentuate cooler tones such as reds, blues, grays, and blacks. If you like dark reds and oranges, browns are your best bet. Light-haired and fair-skinned individuals may want to avoid darker, heavy frames. If you are positive you want black, some pairs have white or clear colors inside of the frame, which will make the glasses appear lighter on your face.

If you have the funds, you may want to invest in both a black and a brown pair in order to match your entire wardrobe. Consider red or white as alternative options, too.

5. Opt for Options

The final step in purchasing the right pair of glasses is to weigh all the different options that are available. Thin, scratch-resistant lenses will last longer and will provide more comfort. If you live in a bright, sunny area as we all wish at one time or another, polarizing is a great feature to invest in.

If you buy your glasses in the store, ask about the replacement policy. If you save money by buying your glasses online, some companies offer a thirty-day return policy if the glasses don’t meet your expectations. If all else fails, ask someone you trust for his or her opinion.
