The end of each year finds people writing out resolutions that will often, unfortunately, become less important and even forgotten as the year progresses. Rather than finding yourself frustrated at a lack of progress come March, try following some of the tips that accompany the most popular – and potentially daunting – resolutions.

1. Lose weight

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. What starts as a positive step in a life-changing direction can fall by the wayside when sticking to a new eating and exercise regimen becomes difficult or boring. Be reasonable about your expectations and go slowly. While weight may initially seem to fall off, hitting a plateau is likely. Keep yourself going with a daily walk on a treadmill, writing in a food diary to remain accountable, and making substitutions so as to not feel deprived.

2. Quit smoking

Believe it or not, it is possible to quit smoking. Do not expect, however, to be nicotine-free overnight. Operate at your own speed. Whether you wean yourself off cigarettes or can quit cold turkey, do what works for you. Don’t compare your progress to someone else’s; you are on your own journey. Consider joining a support group, visiting your doctor for a prescription for the patch, and/or requesting smoking cessation materials from the American Cancer Society. Once you have a better idea of what nicotine does to your body, ‘staying quit’ may be a bit easier.

3. Get debt under control
If only those pesky monthly expenses like rent and utilities could take a backseat while you catch up on debt! Whether you’re paying down student loans, making a car payment, or trying to wriggle free of credit card use, you can take steps towards reducing your debt by creating a budget. Use a program like Quicken to track where your money is currently going. Rather than relying on Starbucks for your good morning latte, brew coffee at home. Whatever steps you take to start saving money, make sure you leave a little splurge money so you won’t feel punished for being fiscally responsible.

4. Go back to school

While it would be easier to attain a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree by enrolling in school full-time, doing so is often not possible given the 40-hour work week and considerations like raising children. Take baby steps: plan a campus visit, research classes that will fit into your schedule, and start by enrolling in one class per semester. One small step will still set you on the path to reach your goal.

5. Volunteer

Giving back is a noble and worthwhile cause but it also has to complement your life. Sign up for volunteer efforts with organizations close to your heart, whether you’re helping preserve the environment or raising funds for cancer research. Volunteering for a cause that you wholly support can make it easier to schedule time when you can help out.

There’s no reason that making New Year’s resolutions has to be met with groans or shame about what you did or didn’t do last year. Just be realistic about your personal expectations, take small steps towards your goals, and remember to reward yourself for your progress. Success awaits!

One day we’re getting carded at the convenience store and the next we’re being called ma’am. For many of us, the aging process seems to take place overnight. We wake up, look in the mirror and wonder what happened. How can we fall asleep looking like we’re 21 and wake up looking 45? Unfortunately, aging is inevitable.

Along with wrinkles and sagging skin comes other, sometimes less obvious, changes. Our joints don’t function as they did, we may experience decreased mental capacity and even elevated blood pressure. While it all sounds like doom and gloom, there is good news. By eating the right foods, we can stop, and sometimes reverse, the signs of aging; even those we can’t see.

Super Foods

These foods are typically calorie dense and pack a nutritional punch. These foods have disease-fighting properties and are easily incorporated into your current diet.

- Plain yogurt: full of calcium, protein and potassium, yogurt is incredibly heart healthy.
- Eggs: these little beauties contain 12 vitamins and minerals and are fantastic for your memory.
- Nuts: an ounce of nuts per day can help lower cholesterol and promote weight loss.
- Kiwis: one of these fuzzy fruits can provide enough Vitamin C to meet your daily requirement.
- Quinoa: the grain is high in vitamins and minerals and can lower your risk for diabetes and heart disease.
- Beans: three cups every week will help lower your cholesterol and rid your body of waste.
- Salmon: the high content of omega-3 will help keep your heart healthy. Two servings a week is all it takes.
- Broccoli: full of Vitamins A, C and K, broccoli will help fill you up and keep your bones strong.
- Sweet Potatoes: delicious plain, these orange vegetables are packed with Vitamin A and help to reduce bone loss.
- Berries: choose your color! Any berry is full of antioxidants and phytonutrients.

Five Foods for Glowing Skin

Believe it or not, there are foods you can eat that will give you a vibrant, healthy glow when eaten regularly as part of your diet. It should be no surprise that four of these foods can be found on the Super Foods list.

- Sweet Potatoes: the beta-carotene contained in sweet potatoes is converted into Vitamin A by our bodies. Vitamin A is known to keep skin soft and pliable.
- Kiwi: thanks to their high levels of Vitamin C, kiwis stimulate collagen production, smoothing out your wrinkles and fine lines.
- Dark Chocolate: cocoa flavanols contribute to softer, hydrated skin. One small piece a day is all you need!
- Yogurt: the biotin found in yogurt will help to strengthen your hair and nails.
- Nuts: the Vitamin E contained in almonds and other nuts can help reduce or even eliminate skin flare-ups.

Foods You’ve Never Thought Of

As with any fad, people tend to jump on the bandwagon and make outrageous claims. Nutrition and anti-aging is no different. While some claims are completely bogus, there are actually some lesser-known foods that have fantastic anti-aging properties.

- Turmeric: this spice is easily found in your grocery store and is a main component of many Asian dishes. The cumin contained in the spice has health benefits that include cancer prevention.
- Goji Berry: this little Chinese wonder has high levels of anti’oxidants which contribute to anti-aging.
- Acai Berry: with up to ten times the antioxidants found in grapes and twice those found in blueberries, these berries also contain omega-3 and a ton of vitamins. In their natural form, they can help your skin look younger and reduce cholesterol.
- Pomegranate: the amount of vitamin C found in pomegranates can help to boost your immune system and hydrate your skin.
- Seaweed: dried seaweed is practically tasteless and easily crumbled over a salad or added to a cooked dish. Full of vitamins and minerals that it leaches from the ocean, seaweed is a great vegetable to add to your anti-aging arsenal.

If you’re concerned with getting older, adding some or all of these foods into your diet can not only keep you looking younger but feeling younger as well. The best thing is that consuming these foods doesn’t require any major change to your diet. Simply add them to the meals you are already cooking or incorporate them as snacks and you’ve made anti-aging virtually hassle-free.

Let me take a minute to explain why I sit on my side of the fence and why — if you sit on the other side — I think you should come join me.

Why is a Green Lawn Great for the Environment?

Though there are tons of reasons why a lush, green lawn is beneficial to our environment, I’ll give you only five:

1. Air Conditioning
In the heat of the summer, my house will be 30 degrees cooler than yours if you are in the middle of an asphalt jungle. Grass keeps the ground cooler so that it puts off less heat. Asphalt and rocks, on the other hand, absorb the heat and release it throughout the day. Don’t believe me? Take off your shoes and walk through the grass towards your driveway or sidewalk. Keep one foot in the grass and put one foot on the concrete. Which foot is cooler?

2. Water Run-Off Prevention
A green lawn that is maintained properly will prevent water runoff into your storm and sewer drains. The extensive underground root system of healthy grass readily absorbs water as it falls from the sky. During a heavy storm, when runoff can’t be avoided, the grass blades act as water filters so that runoff is less polluted than it would otherwise be.

3. Allergen Trap
Did you know that grasses trap pollen grains? No matter which type of grass you have: buffalo, Bermuda, zoysia or perennial rye, the lawn bed traps pollen thus reducing the amount of allergens that are in the air. A lawn that is kept well-manicured and watered will trap more pollutants than any other material in our environment. When the rains come, these grains are washed off of the grass blades and into the ground where they are trapped forever.

4. Noise Reducer
Just like carpeting reduces noise in a home, grass reduces noise outside. Grass, unlike asphalt and other hard surfaces, absorbs sound rather instead of reflecting it. Those cars driving by with their booming systems will sound 20 to 30 percent quieter to a homeowner with a lawn outside than to an apartment dweller in the city.

5. Carbon Dioxide Absorber
A beautiful green lawn absorbs pollutants from the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, and releases clean, breathable oxygen. 625 square feet of lawn produces enough oxygen every day to support one person.

Let’s take a look at the other side of the issue. Naysayers report that grass is, in fact, bad for the environment. But why? It’s not because of the grass itself, but because of the way a lawn is maintained. And, brace yourself: it’s true! However, with a bit of care, we can ensure that we are not causing more harm to the environment than good by:

- Using compost instead of fertilizer
- Using an electric or manually operated lawn mower instead of one powered by gasoline
- Raking leaves instead of using a leaf blower
- Choosing grass seeds that don’t need to be watered frequently in order to survive
- Choosing grass seeds that will thrive in our environment without unnecessary upkeep
- Mow high. Grass that is clipped too shorten will be weak and prone to disease and weed overcrowding

Yes, lawn maintenance can be bad for the environment. Grass, on the other hand, is not. Use a bit of common sense with your lawn care and join me on my side of the fence. The grass is definitely greener.

We’ve all made New Year’s Resolutions that lasted for a day and a half. After that, all bets were off and we were right back to our chubby, swearing, chain-smoking selves. How do people do it? How do they make a New Year’s resolution and stick to it long enough to see results? Here are five ways that you and I can abide by our resolutions this year.

Have Someone Else Make Them

Who knows you, baby? Your loved ones, that’s who! Since they probably know you better than you know yourself, have your spouse, partner or even children make your resolutions for you. When your family makes your resolution, they are more invested in helping you see it through. You’ll be surprised at how creative your family can be. Rather than the standard ‘lose weight’, you might get ‘start a business’ or ‘be more adventurous’.

Be Realistic

I would love to lose 30 pounds in a month. I’d also love to be able to walk five miles tomorrow without feeling like I was going to pass out and die. Will either happen? No. However, I can lose 30 pounds over 12 months and I can probably build myself back up to five miles in less than six months. These, my friends, are what we call realistic resolutions. If you set yourself up for failure, guess what? You’ll fail.

Don’t Be Vague

Any goal setting expert will tell you that your goals needs to be measurable. Rather than ‘I want to eat healthy’ your resolution could be ‘I will eat vegetables five nights a week’. By doing this, you’re giving yourself reachable goals that are easily tracked. Not only are you more likely to stick to your resolutions but you may even be able to tweak them in six months time and achieve more than you thought.

Keep a Journal

People that are serious about their goals write them down. Do the same with your resolutions and post them where they are clearly visible. Keep a journal that tracks your progress. A journal will also give you a great avenue for your feelings. If you are having a tough time sticking to your goals, writing down your thoughts can help you get back on track. Be sure that you aren’t only keeping track of your failures! Making note of your accomplishments will help you track your progress.

Check in On Yourself

Every three months, pull out your journal and read the entries. See where you’ve gone wrong and where you’ve stayed the course. Nothing says that you can’t adjust your resolutions! If you’re making fantastic progress, expand your goal. If you’ve not quite accomplished what you set out to, adjust your timeline. Goals are flexible and so are your resolutions. If you get off track, take a deep breath and get back on.

Now the big question: what’s my resolution? I resolve to volunteer, one weekend a month, to be the designated driver for my friends, whether I am with them or not. See? I wasn’t vague, it’s realistic and I can easily keep track of how well I’m following my resolution. Not to mention, I may just be saving some of my bar-loving friends a trip to the drunk tank.

Mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer that exists today. Thousands of Americans are affected every single year by this condition. If it is one that you are facing, you have to make sure that you understand what you are dealing with. The most common cause of this cancer is asbestos exposure, but there are other things that can lead to Mesothelioma in some cases. Regardless of the cause, there are different types of this condition and each comes with its own treatment, prognosis, and other details that you need to know.

1.Pleural Mesothelioma

This is the most common type of Mesothelioma that people experience. It starts in the lining of the lungs, which causes a variety of different health issues. Usually, this type of cancer begins with a buildup of fluid that occurs between the lining and the chest cavity, known as pleural effusion, which can lead to shortness of breath, coughing, rasping, and other difficulties with breathing.

The cause of this type of Mesothelioma is inhaling asbestos fibers, and it actually is responsible for about 75% of the Mesothelioma cases that are diagnosed today. People with this form of cancer often have a much harder time getting diagnosed because it presents with other lung conditions and health issues, making the right diagnosis hard to pin down. It can also remain latent for up to 4 or 5 decades, which can make it even more severe to deal with when symptoms finally present themselves.

Pleural Mesothelioma has a poor prognosis because it isn’t often caught until the later stages, but some patients will have a better prognosis than others.

2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma

This condition is the second-most common diagnosis, accounting for about 20% of the cases that exist today. Peritoneal cancer develops in the abdomen instead of the lungs, and it is also often diagnosed later in development. However, patients with this type of Mesothelioma generally have a better prognosis and more treatment options. The cause is inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers, which can lead to the cancer developing over time.

With this condition, prognosis is typically less than a year, but this can increase with early detection and effective treatment. Some can live up to 8 years after diagnosis, although most people have a more reasonable life expectancy of 7-9 months because the disease is so advanced when it is diagnosed.

3. Pericardial Mesothelioma

The rarest of Mesothelioma diagnoses, Pericardial Mesothelioma occurs when the cancer affects the heart muscle. Only 1-6% of all cases are diagnosed in this form. The cancer affects the pericardium, which is the membrane that protects and supports the heart. There are only 150-200 cases of this disease that have been reported worldwide. Most patients die within 6 months of diagnosis with this particular cancer, and only one person has been documented to live 5 years after diagnosis.

Symptoms of this condition are common to other heart conditions, which makes diagnosis difficult. Combined with the rarity of the condition, these symptoms often cause diagnosis to come far too late for effective treatment to be an option.

Driving is dangerous at the best of times, with roads becoming increasingly congested and driving standards seeming to slip. We could therefore do without unnecessary distractions, but we simply wouldn’t be human if we hadn’t had our attention wane at some point while behind the wheel.

Price comparison website MoneySupermarket.com therefore set out on a mission to find the ten biggest distractions which are faced by motorists on a daily basis by conducting a survey encompassing over 2,000 drivers. Some of the distractions which were named might shock you…

10. Twitter

With over 175 million users world wide, it is perhaps unsurprising to find the Twitter has made it onto the top ten list. With an increasing number of motorists now owning smart phones with social networking capabilities, the number of people who are capable of interacting while on the move is growing.

It seems that not everyone has yet developed boundaries for when it is and isn’t acceptable to take advantage of these devices, with Twitter having been named as a distraction by 1% of those surveyed.

One recent high profile victim of this phenomenon was Dr Frank Ryan who died in a car accident inBeverly Hillslast summer. It is believed that he had been tweeting at the time that the crash occurred.

9. Facebook

Facebook is still the most popular social networking website around, with the company claiming that it has an unbelievable 800 million world wide users. It is therefore understandable that it managed to finish above Twitter in this list. Nevertheless, both Facebook and Twitter and likely to become far more prominent on this list in the coming years as the number of people who own smart phones that feature social networking apps increases.

However, both of these companies are likely to face competition from another social networking website in the coming years; namely Google+ which was launched earlier this year. This could well be another distraction which is named by motorists on future versions of this survey.

8. Make-up

5% of drivers who responded to the survey admitted applying cosmetic products while driving; possibly while in a rush to get to work in the mornings. However, this excuse will not wash with the authorities, with motorists convicted of this act likely to face financial penalties and have points added to their licence.

The real number of motorists guilty of this is likely to be far higher, with The Telegraph reporting that up to half a million road crashes are caused by people applying make-up in theUKalone each year.

7. Fatigue

Prepare for the most shocking statistic on this list…5% of the motorists surveyed admitted that they had at least started to fall asleep while driving on some occasions. This is a terrifying realisation, with these people not only placing themselves in danger; but also endangering the lives of others.

There really is no excuse for this anymore, with government campaigns warning of the dangers of driving while suffering from fatigue and the majority of roadside hotels willing to offer cheap rates for motorists in search of a couple of hours rest before continuing their journeys.

6. Texting

Smart phones have already helped social networks Facebook and Twitter into the top ten of driving distractions; it therefore seems logical that texting should also make it given that more phones are capable of texting than are capable of social networking.

16% of motorists admitted to texting while driving. This is despite the findings of a study conducted by Texas University which found that motorists who text while driving are 11 times more likely to miss a red light and will see their reaction times delayed by 3-4 seconds on average.

5. Becoming Detective

21% of those surveyed admitted that they regularly take their attention off the road ahead of them in order survey accidents involving other motorists. This is despite the fact that it increases the chances of the driver being involved in an accident themselves if the traffic up ahead suddenly stops.

Another unfortunate by-product of people slowing down to take a closer look at accidents is of course further congestion and a greater possibility of traffic jams.

4. Calling

So far mobile phones have been responsible for the presence of Twitter, Facebook and texting on this top ten list; it therefore makes sense that they would also be responsible for distracting due to their main purpose; with 23% of motorists admitting to having been distracted while driving by making or receiving phone calls.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the illegal usage of phones, as taking via Bluetooth kits is also included in this. A recent study byCarnegieMellonUniversityfound that any kind of phone usage will reduce a driver’s focus on the task at hand by 37%.

3. Drinking

51% of respondents claimed that they regularly drink while driving. It should be noted that this doesn’t include drinks of the alcoholic variety. Nevertheless, it still requires the driver to take one hand off the wheel and hence increases the chances of the motorist losing control of the vehicle.

2. Eating

The same number of survey respondents also admitted to eating while driving. The same kinds of risks also apply in this situation, and it is therefore recommended that drivers refrain from this action whenever possible.

However, eating and drinking while driving seems to be becoming increasingly common place in the modern day and age, with hectic lifestyles resulting in more motorists choosing to eat their breakfasts on the way to work in the mornings. Indeed, Facebook groups have been set up for people who regularly conduct this offence.

1. Music

The distraction which was named most frequently by motorists is actually music. This is nothing new, with cassette players, radios and CD players having been common place in the majority of vehicles for many years.

However, with more people now owning iPods this distraction is becoming increasingly dangerous as the devices require more of the motorists attention to operate. Music was named as a distraction by an overwhelming 61% of respondents.

As I sit and watch ‘Miss Congeniality’ for the hundredth time, I laugh as the writers poke fun at the Miss America pageant. The interview portion plays and each contestant’s answer to the question posed is ‘world peace.’ It’s a bit of light-hearted fun but it has made me stop and think: is world peace really possible?

What if, instead of thinking in planetary terms, we thought of our own world? Because really, what does our world consist of on a personal level? What if it all starts in our own backyards? Our neighbors, family, friends and co-workers make up our personal world; what if we started with our own personal world and took it from there? And, just imagine if it continued to spread around the globe–who knows the impact you could have?

1. Smile

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to not return a smile? Or how a simple smile from a stranger can lift your spirits? While it’s very easy to walk through life with a frown on your face, it’s just as easy to greet every stranger you meet with a pleasant smile and a ‘how are you?’ Try it! Soon, you’ll find that smiling at people becomes a habit and not only will you brighten someone else’s day, you’ll put yourself in a better mood.

2. Listen

We all have problems in our lives and baggage that we carry with us on a daily basis. Have you ever wished that you had someone you could talk to? Everyone feels that way. Lending an ear to a friend in need is a great way to help someone feel better. Listening, though, is a skill that needs to be practiced. Too often we hear, but don’t listen. We’re so busy trying to think of what to say, or what advice we can give, that we hear half of what’s being said. Be an active listener when a friend has something on their mind.

3. Follow the Golden Rule

Treating others how you want to be treated may sound trite but it’s a fantastic way to live. Rather than reacting to a situation immediately, stop for a moment and consider how you would want to be treated in that same situation if roles were reversed. When you get in the habit of doing this, you’ll find that you begin to treat people in a kinder manner without having to think about it.

4. Learn Empathy

Being empathetic is not the same as being sympathetic. To have empathy for someone means that you are able to understand how it feels to be in their situation. It does not mean, however, that you’ve necessarily experienced their exact pain. It’s very easy, for instance, to empathize with someone that has lost their job, has suffered the loss of a loved one or is having a difficult time in school. People don’t want others to feel sorry for them, they simply want to know that someone understands.

5. Help for the Sake of Helping

If someone needs your help, help them for that reason and not because you expect something in return. If you see your neighbor painting the house, run over and grab a brush. If your sister is preparing a large holiday meal, go early and help set up. It’s these small acts of kindness, with no expectations, that inspire people to ‘pay it forward.’ Be the catalyst of kind to all those with whom you come into contact.

World peace is achievable, if only on a person-to-person level. Start with your own world and you may just find that the peace you spread reaches further than you thought possible—and meanwhile, you’ve made your small corner of the universe a better place!

Our level of productivity, awareness and energy during the day relies on the amount of sleep we are receiving at night. Sometimes it isn’t by choice that we find it increasingly difficult to get a full nights sleep and there can be a vast number of reasons behind this. By making simple changes to your lifestyle you can once again enjoy the feeling of waking up refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Listed below are 5 ways to get a good nights sleep.

Avoid Caffeine in the afternoon

Not only is caffeine a diuretic causing frequent bathroom trips, it is also a potent stimulant which can stay in your system effecting sleep up to 12 hours later. Aim to have caffeinated drinks in the morning to ensure it is well out of your system by bed time, or better yet cut the consumption of caffeine down altogether.

Ensure your mattress suits your body

Choosing a mattress for your bed should be no rushed decision, considering you intend to spend at least 8 hours a night on it! Take your time when choosing a mattress, try it out in the shop, ask questions about the product and never buy one just because it’s on sale. Choose a mattress that is produced using as many natural materials as possible, some synthetic fabrics can release harmful vapors, which affect your health and sleep. A mattress containing a layer of wool is both comfortable and beneficial for relieving aches and pains while you sleep.

Avoid Alcohol before bed

Although a night cap is commonly thought of as a sleep aid, this is mostly a myth. The reason is although alcohol can help you to drift off to sleep easier, it doesn’t aid a restful sleep. Your body works through the night to process the substance effecting your sleep quality and causing you to wake throughout the night. It’s best to avoid any amount of alcohol before bed for this reason.

Exercise regularly

Not only is exercise great for your body, it helps you sleep better too! As little as 30 minutes aerobic exercise a day can be enough to make a difference to your sleeping patterns. Exercises promotes Slow-wave sleep, which is the deepest, most intense sleeping pattern. It’s this important sleep component that allows us to feel refreshed and rejuvenated in the morning. Slow-wave sleep is also linked to the release of a growth hormone, for this reason children typically experience slow-wave sleep patterns far more often than adults.

Stick to a sleep schedule

Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, although it sounds monotonous, having a healthy body clock is a great way to ensure your body gets the rest it needs. Avoid sleeping-in during the weekends too as over-sleeping can cause you to feel just as drained as under-sleeping, both of which make rising from bed difficult. With this in mind, eliminate irregular naps unless you are sick, pregnant or feeling extremely exhausted. Day-time naps longer than 20 minutes can interfere with your night-time slumber which can spark a cycle of irregular sleep patterns, almost always leading to insomnia troubles.

Get a good night’s sleep with Dreamwool, they specialise in natural latex mattresses and cot mattresses.

The best way to stay healthy in your later years is to stay active in body, mind, and soul. It is a known fact that with proper nutrition and exercise you have a better chance of a longer and more fulfilling life. Staying active will keep you healthier, happier, and stronger. It is imperative in your senior years to find ways to stay active – regardless of your limitations, so don’t be a couch potato, get moving!

Stay Active with Exercise

There are plenty of low-impact aerobic exercises to keep you active in your senior years. It can be as simple as taking a walk. There is nothing more refreshing than taking a nice, leisurely stroll through nature. Walk around your neighborhood or do a few extra laps while out shopping in the store.

If walking isn’t an option, try bicycling. Riding a bike is also a low-impact way to stay fit for any age. If you own a bike, just hop on; start out slow and ride around the streets near your home. If you live near a tourist or beach area, there are often bicycle rentals for you to enjoy a scenic ride around. They are usually inexpensive and a fun way to explore your surroundings. If you’d rather exercise indoor, stationary bikes are always a good option. Just pedal away while you watch your favorite shows on the television.

If walking or bicycling is too much impact on the joints, a great option is water aerobics. Exercising in the water is especially beneficial for seniors because there is no stress on the joints. It is a great workout that combines resistance strength training with coordination and movement.

Activate Your Mind

Another very important way for you to stay active is by keeping your mind active. The old adage “If you don’t use it, you lose it” is true. Keeping your mind active aids in your overall health and is a prevention measure against Alzheimer’s disease.

Crossword puzzles, picture puzzles, and mind games are a great way to exercise the mind. These games and puzzles require concentration and help to keep the thinking process active. A computer is a great way to access all sorts of games and puzzles that are perfect for you to keep the mind juices flowing. If you prefer the old fashioned method, many puzzle books and word finds are available in print. Putting together a multi-pieced puzzle is a great way to stay active and have a nice treasure to boot when it’s complete.

Keeping the mind active is really not that complicated. Read a book, newspaper, or magazine and keep up with current events. Don’t just rely on the television for your information; this doesn’t do much to keep you active at any age.

Stay Active with Hobbies

Staying active does not have to be work. You can stay active while doing something you enjoy and while interacting with others. The options are many; for example: Bingo, shopping, and gardening.

Several places offer Bingo which is another mind stimulating activity for seniors. It is a great outing to be social, have fun, and possibly win some money. Spend a day looking for great deals and used treasures by shopping yard sales and stopping along antique shops. Your day will begin early in the morning and you will be active all day looking for sales. Gardening is also a great hobby to keep active and to get you in the outdoors. There is nothing more gratifying than growing your own food or watching your flowerbed blossom.

Stay Active Socially

Perhaps the most important way to stay active, staying active socially during retirement and beyond helps give seniors a sense of belonging, community, family and friendship. Looking at any of the other activities outlined in this article, it’s easy to see how they can all be enjoyed the most with company. Whether living at home or in an assisted living community or other retirement facility, seniors can maintain long-lasting friendships and social bonds by participating in community activities like senior field trips, dancing lessons or game nights. Relaxing, low-impact activities like a gentle walk through a local park, casual shopping trips, a weekend luncheon or a trip to the library can become an opportunity for social engagement, whether going with friends or making new ones. You’ll find that staying socially active actually provides opportunity for keeping both the mind and body active as well.

Loving activities!

Immersing yourself with things you enjoy will fulfill your need to nurture and care. Grandchildren and great grandchildren are often one of the more common ways for elderly to explore their loving activities but when family lives far away and or are not always available there are other ways to keep the heart active: charities and clubs can fill the holes of the heart with friendships and companionship. The feeling of giving and sharing with others gives anyone the ability to feel grateful and appreciative of what they have and what they have to give.
