The scent of spiced apples, the roar of school buses in the morning and the red and gold of the leaves in the trees all point to one fact: Fall is here. With the change of the season brings the chance to swap out your current spring and summer wardrobe for your fall and winter getup. As you take inventory of your wardrobe, make sure it contains these fall essentials.
Boots
Boots are the best footwear for fall. Fashion boots look great over a pair of skinny jeans, paired with leggings or even with a knee-length skirt. Your options for boots are nearly endless. Cowgirl boots, knee-high riding boots and even short ankle boots can all be added to this year’s fall wardrobe.
The good news about boots is that this is a trend that has stuck around for a while, so if you have a pair that is in good shape, it will probably work into your current wardrobe well. If you don’t, then it’s time to go shopping. This is a trend that was hot last year and is probably going to stay hot in the years to come. Invest in a pair with a mid-height heel to ensure you get a few years out of it.
Fitted jacket
The fitted jacket is the must-have piece for fall. Not only does it look great as it carefully hugs your curves, but it also helps you layer. You can throw it over a lightweight top or even a short sleeved shirt, to help you as the weather transitions from warm to cold.
Choose a jacket that complements your figure. If you have curves, find an angular jacket to give yourself some defined lines. If you are more of a boyish figure, pick a jacket that gives you a waistline. If you have a bit too much padding around the middle, hide the extra weight with the right jacket.
Leggings
Leggings allow you to turn your summer and spring dresses and short skirts into fall staples. They make almost any outfit a bit more comfortable, so you are not worrying about whether or not the dress is long enough, and they perfectly complement long sweaters or tunic tops. The other great feature of leggings is their affordability. You can pick up several pairs to get a few colors into your wardrobe without spending much at all.
Short patterned dress
Remember the leggings you just added to your wardrobe? To get the most out of them, you also want a short patterned dress. The little dress made it into the list of the fall “must haves” with the introduction of the Miu Miu line of 1940’s inspired dresses in the fall of 2011. Because of this line, polka dots (small ones), stripes, plaids and even floral prints are all making their way onto the runways this fall. While you may not want to invest over $1,000 in a designer dress, you can find these at your local Sears, Forever 21, H&M or similar retailer. Expect them to fall well above the knee, so you will definitely want the leggings.
Pumps
A great pair of pumps will take you far this fall. These work for the office or a night out and are a definite wardrobe essential this fall. Metallics, rhinestones, suede and snake-effect materials are all hot this year. Invest in a few solid pairs to round out your fall wardrobe.
Now that temperatures are dropping, you are going to want to be out and about, so make sure your wardrobe is ready. With these five essentials, you can dress up what you already have and prepare well for the upcoming season.
