Five Reasons to Engage in Online Gaming

The Internet has made it easy for people to access and play a wide range of video games for free. Developers create everything from complex multiplayer online worlds to simple games that are easy enough for anyone to pick up on in just a minute or two.

In addition to hours of unbridled entertainment, free online games offer a plethora of benefits to players. Here are the top five benefits of playing online games:

5. Provide Positive Reinforcement

Online games provide positive reinforcement as you progress through the levels, which makes them fun to participate in. If you can spend a few minutes getting a positive emotional buzz, this is reason enough for many people. In the midst of stressful events, playing simple games online can provide the emotional boost that’s needed to get through a day.

4. Maintain Mental Function

Many types of games are designed for people to play as they age, with the goal of maintaining and even improving mental function. These games use different parts of the brain and specifically assist with memory, spatial skills, concentration and problem solving. Considering that a recent study has shown that mentally stimulating activities may help to ward off Alzheimer’s disease, it’s always good to challenge yourself whenever possible.

3. Promote Social Interaction

Many online games have a social interactivity feature that allows you to compete with friends, all while maintaining social contact with people you may not ordinarily interact with. For example, Words with Friends has taken the world by storm recently, allowing people to play tile-based word games on a turn-by-turn basis with friends on their computers or their mobile devices. Other online games allow users to share their high scores or to help out their friends by giving in-game perks away.

2. Develop Job Skills

As odd as it sounds, playing games online is actually a decent way to develop some skills that employers are looking for. In addition to basic computer literacy, games promote strategic thinking, formation of long-term plans and the ability to quickly adjust to changes, all of which are skills that are important to employers. Remember that the next time you’re interviewing for a job!

1. Encourage Problem Solving

This is especially good for kids who have sharp minds and pick up easily on patterns. Many types of web-based games use simple interfaces and require children to solve problems to progress through the various levels. This strategic thinking gives kids skills that they can use in their education and when they solve actual problems they encounter on a daily basis in their peer groups.

With such a wide range of online games available, anyone can find at least one or two appealing games to play on a regular basis. If you ever get bored of a game, rest assured that there are always plenty of new ones to try. As technology advances, new online games will become increasingly sophisticated and interesting. Good luck!
