Recycled Paper

Simply starting with a commitment to using recycled paper products is a good start for anyone. Whether you’re buying reams for a home printer or choosing business card stock, you can look for the recycled symbol.  It takes a lot of raw materials like water, trees and energy to produce virgin paper.  But recycled paper requires fewer resources and produces less pollution during the production process.  All paper requires some amount of bleaching, which involves toxic chemicals, but recycled paper needs less bleaching than virgin paper.

When choosing recycled paper, there are specific things to look for. First, look for paper that has some percentage of Post Consumer Waste (PCW). The best choices in paper are those that also have the acronyms (PCF) and (FSC) this means that they were Processed Chemical Free and Forest Stewardship Council certified respectively.  Paper that has one or more of these attributes is definitely a greener option.

Tree-Less Paper

For the hardcore Greenists there are some completely tree-less paper options that are viable for many situations.  There are actually a few different kinds of tree-less paper available. Among the most popular are Hemp, Kenaf, Bamboo, Sugar Cane, and even Poop paper. The poop paper is a kind of paper made of Elephant feces. It sounds disgusting but their diets provide ample materials that are necessary for making paper. While poop is intriguing it is not the most highly marketed kind of tree-less paper. For most business and home offices there are more practical options like Sugar cane paper which can be purchased in reams and used for standard printing jobs.  Other kinds of tree-less paper like hemp and Kenaf are also becoming more widely available for multi-purpose use. All of these products are growing in popularity for commercial use, as well as in stationary, invitations and envelopes.

Making the switch to soy and vegetable based inks isn’t easy for everyone.  These kinds of inks aren’t particularly compatible with home printers or with coated paper like the kind used in magazine printing.  But they are available for many large printing jobs. A completely paperless life may be ideal, but it’s also close to impossible.
