The Top 5 Highest Selling Cars of All Time
Since the automotive industry has been in business for well over a century, there has been plenty of room for a vast array of models and marques to be brought into production. Some of these have achieved much greater results than others, hitting sales records into the millions. But what are the top 5 highest selling cars of all time?
5. Ford Escort – 20 million sold
The fifth highest selling car of all time is the Ford Escort. Even though it is now out of production, it remains one of Ford’s most popular models. It was in production from 1967 until 2003; in this time it sold an impressive 20 million units. The Ford Escort was the umbrella title for multiple versions of the model including estates, saloons, and vans.
4. Volkswagen Beetle – 22.3 million sold
The VW is one of the most recognisable car designs around. The trademark curves of the Beetle have featured in popular TV shows and films, including Herbie. In fact, the Beetle has been in production since before WW2 (1938), and in this time it has sold 22.3 million units.
3. Volkswagen Golf – 25 million sold
The third highest selling car is the Volkswagen Golf. The Golf is even more popular than the Beetle, selling over 25 million units in 36 years of production. One of the major appealing features of the Golf is the powerful, yet efficient engine.
2. Ford F-series – 24 million sold
With 24 million sales since its birth in 1948, the Ford F-series is the second highest selling car of all time. In fact it has been so popular with buyers, especially in US markets, that it is thought one is sold every 30 seconds.
1. Toyota Corolla – 35 million sold
Even though Toyota has faced a few problems over the past year, the Toyota Corolla is still the highest selling car of all time. 35 million Corolla’s have been sold over the forty years it has been in production. Nine generations of the vehicle have been manufacture, and more look set to come.
