Chris Pine is a new and emerging super star of tomorrow and that is testified by the range of talents he has. Not only does he hold strong acting skills in his repertoire of craftsmanship, but he can also sing and fake different accents with his brilliant deep voice.
Enamored with a great sense of humor, Chris says that he would have chosen to be a political speech writer had he not been an actor. This goes on to show his intellectual inclinations and tells a lot about how seriously he is also aware of the issues around the world. He himself said after visiting the troops in Kuwait for showing his first major blockbuster movie Star Trek (2009), that what he does is just a make believe and comparatively his work gets trivialized in front of what the real men do in the fields for their country.
Chris was born in Los Angeles, California and is of Welsh and Jewish descent from his mother’s side of the family. In one of his interviews he stated that, “I definitely have a spiritual outlook… I am not a religious guy, I am probably agnostic”. In fact the reason that he gives of joining the movie business was to meet people and find some friends with common interest as his.
Chris comes from a long line of actors, with both of his parents and his elder sister being actors as well as his maternal grandmother who starred in B movies in the 1930s and the 1940s. His father, Robert Pine, played the famous role of Sergeant Joseph Getraer in the 1980s hit television series, ChiPs. Chris went to study English at the University of Leeds after finishing his studies of bachelor’s degree in English at the University of California, Berkeley in 2002. He describes himself as a chapter ahead of the gawky club, because he was so studious. He still loves reading books and says that is what he ends up doing in his leisure time despite making lots of other plans. After his graduation from England, he also studied acting in the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
Chris still does plays in between films and so far he has done two plays, Farragut North (2008), which is now being developed into a movie by George Clooney, and The Lieutenant of Inishmore (2010). Chris loves to do theatre and wants to work on Broadway someday. Chris actually started his acting career with appearances in television series such as ER, The Guardian, CSI: Miami, American Dreams, Six Feet Under and has also done a television movie, Surrender, Dorothy (2006) along with Diane Keaton in the lead, where he played a gay role. In the movies at first, Chris appeared as a love interest in the Disney romantic comedy The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) as Nicholas Devereaux, then a couple of more romantic comedies like Just My Luck (2006) and Blind Dating (2006) followed. Chris likes to do a variety of roles and does not like sticking with a particular kind of an image. Throughout his little known acting career, Chris has been able to do just that so far.
Chris gained immediate media attention and a lot of fan frenzy through his popular culture’s iconic role as Captain James Tiberius Kirk in the latest installment in the Star Trek movies. At first he did not get the part for the movie and for months he said he forgot about it until his publicist came back to him and asked if he is still interested. He met with the director, J. J. Abrams and Zachary Quinto and immediately the role was all his to play. Star Trek was nominated for four Academy Awards and won for Best Makeup, which makes it the first Star Trek film to win an Oscar.
The recent movie that is a major leap forward for him is Unstoppable (2010), an action-thriller directed by Tony Scott where he stars alongside Denzel Washington. The movie is partially based on a true incident and Chris plays the role of a newly trained conductor. His character, along with Denzel’s, tries to stop the unmanned train full of toxic chemicals which is hurtling towards a populated town. The movie as well as his performance has received favorable reviews. The movie was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing.
His future projects definitely include a much awaited unnamed sequel to the Star Trek movie and a romantic comedy, This Means War, with Tom Hardy from Inception and Reese Witherspoon, which is scheduled to be in theaters sometime in 2012. Besides that he is also working on a project playing a CIA analyst Jack Ryan in Rise of the Guardians (2012).
