Top 10 Best Penny Auction Sites
August 30, 2009 by List Guy · 39 Comments
Penny Auctions are a new type of auction where users can get fantastic deals on brand new items. The catch is that each bid costs a little bit of money – typically under $1.00. You have to be the last bidder on the auction when the time runs out. Each bid that is placed raises the price of the auction by a penny and extends the time by a few seconds. Hence the name, penny auction.
Penny auctions are fun and exciting, and it is possible to sometimes score a great deal. However, you have to be careful because there are many sites which are dishonest or simply fraudulent. This list contains the best penny auction sites which have been checked out and are legitimate.
http://www.swoopo.com/
One of the oldest sites around. Hard to win anything, but lots of products. Slow. Same auctions run in multiple countries, which means you are competing with people from all over the world.
http://www.bidrodeo.com/
A well designed and professionally run penny auction site. Fast with fantastic customer support. Not too bid, Not as many users means less competition and higher chances of winning.
http://www.rockybids.com/
Lots of free bids and a few products. Kind of slow, but one of the leaders. Good customer support.
http://www.zoozle.com/
A crazy name and descent product selection. Not too pretty, but honest and professional.
http://www.bidcactus.com/
A promising site but it seems all that they sell is small items, bid packs, and low-value gift cards.
http://www.gobid.com/
Not as quick or pretty as some of the others, but worth a look. They sell mostly small items but are known to be legit, which is a lot to say compared to other sites not on this list.
http://www.bidstick.com/
BidStick is a mid-sized auction site and does offer an varied product selection. It is one of the quicker sites on this list.
http://www.bidray.com/
One of the biggest problems with this site is the annoying guy who walks onto your screen whenever you visit. Besides that, a descent site with a nice products.
http://www.junglecents.com/
This is slightly different take on the penny auction model. Instead of paying per bid, you pay per seat. Once all the seats are full, the auction runs and the last person to bid wins. Unfortunately, the auctions do not run very often.
http://www.pennypurses.com/
A niche penny auction site dedicated to what women love most – purses. Designer bags can be yours for only a few bucks, if you can bid smarter than the competition.
Penny auctions are fun and exciting, and it is possible to sometimes score a great deal. However, you have to be careful because there are many sites which are dishonest or simply fraudulent. This list contains the best penny auction sites which have been checked out and are legitimate.

As with all new services, educating consumers and arming them with appropriate expectations is key. Much of the criticism penny auctions receive stems from the fact that few people win and everyone expects to get a great deal without much effort. Noone can fault the auction sites for channeling these human needs. It’s called business. It is up to consumers to educate themselves by doing their homework, such as checking out review sites like http://www.pennyauctionguide.com. It’s just like everything in life: luck favors the prepared.

They also have it for larger items like ps3s ipods and womens purses. auction squirrel was down but i think it is back up after maintenance.

I would like to mention our site, http://www.bidzilla.com. About a year ago we decided to start Bidzilla, and I really want to emphasize that we are not just another Swoopo clone. Our goal is to take a fun and exciting way to shop, as pioneered by Swoopo, and make it fair. As a new business owner, any feedback is extremely valuable to us, as we are working to create the best site and experience possible.
While our basic auction type is the same one that you have seen on other sites such as Swoopo, we have added other features that make ours more fair for everyone.
First of all we added a rewards program that gives you items for free just for participating, so you can still get the items of your choosing even if you don’t actually win an auction. It works by giving you credits for bidding, which you can spend to get anything you want from our rewards store. As you bid more, you can earn higher rewards levels, which allows you to earn points faster. In a similar vein, we created a leaderboard that recognizes and gives bonuses to the users who save the most each month.
Next we have made changes to the Auto Bidder that make it completely fair to those who use it. On Swoopo, BidButler has been famously criticized for overbidding. I’m not sure whether you have actually tried using it yourself, but if you have, then you know that one of the main reasons it places so many bids is due to the BidButler “duels”. A duel occurs whenever two users turn BidButler on in the same auction, and the result is that those two BidButlers instantly place all of their bids until one of the two reaches a stopping criteria. Since other users cannot contribute any bids during that time, the users with BidButlers carry all the weight of bringing the price up when there is a duel. We have completely eliminated this ridiculous behavior from Bidzilla. Our Auto Bidder is designed to act like a human. It selects a time randomly (below 10 seconds) every time a bid is placed. Then if the timer hits its time before a bid is placed, it will bid. This way a user who sets Auto Bidder is not forced to bid every single time even if other users have Auto Bidder set too. Just like a human, most of the time the Auto Bidder will not bid, but rather allow others to bid up the price, while it saves its bids for later. Moreover you can set Auto Bidder without worrying that you will come back shortly only to find that it had placed all of your bids in a matter of seconds.
The last thing we have added that I think you might find interesting is in-auction chat and the ability to take notes on other players. These features contribute to the amount of strategy that goes into bidding because they allow you to get to know the other users and learn their behavior. Users who can really figure out what strategies other bidders are using, can use that information to save tons of bids and therefore be very successful.
This is all on top of a really innovative website design that makes the whole experience much more enjoyable.
We’re looking for feedback from the penny auction / entertainment auction community. Please email us at support@bidzilla.com or leave your feedback here so we can continue to improve the experience.
I’d really love for you to try the site risk free. if you follow this link and sign up I’ll give you 15 free bids. All you have to do is buy the 15 bid package and then enter the promo code which will negate the cost. You will have to sign up with a credit card for security reasons.

There’s more than 100 different penny auctions now and it’s almost impossible to know which ones offer the best deals and don’t cheat the users. The key to success in these penny auction sites is to know which ones give you credit for lost bids that way even if you don’t win the auction you still get to use those lost bids towards the purchase of the item at a great price. There are a couple of reviews that have done a good job of differentiating the penny auctions. This entertainment auction chart is pretty helpful at identifying the major differences:
